Bulldogs, Shoes, Eagles Pick Up Wins In Soccer Tourney

Effingham St. Anthony, Teutopolis and Newton were opening round winners in the St. Anthony/Teutopolis Soccer Tournament Tuesday. The tourney is being played at St. Anthony and Teutopolis.

The Bulldogs captured a 4-0 win over Greenville. St. Anthony scored within the first five minutes when Will Swingler headed the ball and it was deflected by a defender to the back of the net.

Greenville responded quickly and scored two goals within six minutes and the Bulldogs were down 2-1 at the half.

At the beginning of the second half, Greenville put pressure and scored its third goal within the first five minutes of the half. St. Anthony scored a second goal when Wade Lawrence passed the ball to Luke Swingler and Swingler put it in the back of the net with 18 minutes left in the game.

With less than two minutes to go, the Swingler brothers, Will and Luke, worked together to score the third goal and Luke's second of the match. With 40 seconds left, Jack Elder signaled to Wade Lawrence to play the ball to him as he saw the top right of the opponent's goalie box empty. Lawrence passed the ball to Elder who settled it and shot it into the opposite top corner, giving the Bulldogs the win.

"Grace Hakman provided great defensive support and opportunities in the mid-field," said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes. "I'm really proud of our team. we never gave up and always believed we could come back from behind. Our seniors played very well and showed great leadership. Wade and Luke were great scoring or creating opportunities for goals."

In the other match at St. Anthony, Mount Carmel blanked Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran, 4-0.

Teutopolis claimed a 7-2 win over Harrisburg.

The Wooden Shoes had seven goals on five assists and took 23 shots on target.

Alesia Bucciarelli finished with three goals to lead the way for the Shoes. Adding two goals was Derek Deters. Linus Tanneryd and Kaleb Bannick had one goal apiece.

Bucciarelli had three assists while Tanneryd and Derek Deters had one each.

Goalie for the Shoes was Seth Emmerich.

In other contests, Newton defeated Pinckneyville 4-2 and Altamont played to a 3-3 tie with Salem.

Today's matches at St. Anthony are the Bulldogs against Centralia CORL at 4 and Salem taking on Harrisburg at 5:15. At T-town, Newton will face Greenville at 4 followed by Pinckneyville against Altamont at 5:15 and T-town taking on Mount Carmel at 6:30.
