NEWTON -- Newton High School scored all of its three goals in the first half as the Eagles beat Effingham St. Anthony, 3-1 in soccer action Thursday.

The Eagles scored at the 33 minute mark, with 14 minutes and with 13 minutes left in the first half.

St. Anthony's Jack Elder saved a penalty taken to the lower right corner and had another penalty missed by Newton in the second half. He also had 14 saves.

In the second half, with 28 minutes remaining, Reilly Ashton scored a goal from a pass by Luke Swingler.

"The team played very well like I know they can play," said Coach Martin Reyes. "I'm very proud of this team and blessed to be part of it.

"It's hard to choose a key player because every player was key to our game. We lost to a great team, but we played them close and with a lot of heart."
