Mattoon Wins Red & Gold Soccer Tourney

CHARLESTON -- Mattoon and Charleston squared off for the championship of the Charleston Red & Gold Soccer Tournament Saturday.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead on Mattoon at the end of the first half. But Mattoon came back in the second half to tie the score and that's where it ended at a 1-1 tie. Both teams came into the day with two victories, but the Green Wave ended up winning on a better goal differential.

In the Gold Pool, Mattoon and Charleston were tied while Teutopolis and Centralia tied for second. In the Red Pool, Newton had a 2-0-1 record followed by Monticello 1-0-2, Effingham 1-2 and Olney 0-2-1.

The Hearts played two games Saturday falling to Newton 5-0. Bar had a goal in the 27 minute mark while Moragues had a goal at 24 minutes, R. Farley at 20 minutes and Cucinella at 10 minutes.

In the second half, Moragues scored the fifth goal for Newton at 17 minutes.

Olney and Monticello played to a 2-2 tie before the Hearts downed Olney 4-1. Mulheron scored a goal for EHS with 20 minutes in the first half. Bowlin scored at 19 minutes and Mulheron scored again at 10 minutes. Alex Paisley had two saves.

In the second half, Effingham's Said Angel scored at 19 minutes and Maria Dust took a shot on goal. Olney's Burckhartt had a goal at 20 minutes.

Newton and Monticello then played to a 2-2 tie.

Named to the All-Tournament Red Pool were Noah Mulheron (Effingham), Alex Paisley (Effingham), Collin Harris (Newton), Greg Shinn (Newton), Nacho Moragues (Newton), Cole Farley (Newton), Jack Chapman (Newton), Dylan Seesengood (Olney), Grant Ginalick (Monticello) Noah Hanselman (Monticello) and Carter Burgener (Monticello). Most Valuable Player was Ben Carr (Newton).

In the Gold Pool, Mattoon went 2-0-1 as did Charleston 2-0-1, Teutopolis 0-2-1 and Centralia 0-2-1.

Named to the All-Tournament Gold Pool were Alex Kowalski (Teutopolis), Alex Probst (Teutopolis), Byron Cruz (Centralia), Jack Thain (Charleston), Grant Cline (Charleston), Eli Wilson-Brown (Charleston), Alex Lensink (Mattoon), Shane Ghere (Mattoon), Camdyn Considine (Mattoon) and Tiago Lages (Mattoon). Most Valuable Player was Jake Ghere (Mattoon).

In the junior varsity tournament, Friday's Gold Pool scores were: Teutopolis 2, Charleston 0 and Mattoon A 4, Centralia 0. Saturday's scores were Mattoon 1, Charleston 0 and Teutopolis 1, Centralia 0. The Gold Pool final standings were Mattoon 3-0, Teutopolis 2-1, Centralia 0-2-1 and Charleston 0-2-1.

In the junior varsity tournament, Saturday's Red Pool scores were: Mattoon B 4, Effingham 2, Monticello 3, Olney 1, Olney 2, Effingham 0 and Mattoon B 1, Monticello 1. Red Pool final standings were Monticello 2-0, Mattoon B 1-0-2, Olney 1-1-1 and Effingham 0-3.
