Mattoon Blanks Effingham in Soccer

Effingham High School played host to Mattoon in soccer competition Thursday and the Green Wave went home with an 8-0 victory.

Scoring in the first half for the Green Wave were Will Barquin on an unassisted goal in the third minute. In the sixth minute, Cole Kidwell scored with an assist from Alex Lensink. Jake Ghere tallied a goal with an assist from Greg Thorne. Thorne came back with a goal on a penalty kick. In the 33rd minute, Rayme Hamilton scored for a 5-0 lead at the half.

Mattoon's Nathan Ray scored a goal and Kidwell tallied a second goal with an assist from Ghere. Jakob Weder finished the scoring with an assist from Damien Ferguson in the second half.

Effingham's Will Starwalt  had 14 saves.

Mattoon improved to 5-0 in the Apollo Conference, 12-0-1 overall.
