EHS Drops Contest at Red & Gold Invite, Altamont Beats Carlyle

CHARLESTON -- Effingham High School opened action in the Charleston Red & Gold Soccer Invitational by dropping a 7-0 loss to Olney Thursday.

Olney's Josiah Burckhardt had three goals in the contest while Trey Nosek tallied two goals. The other two came from Kyle Stallard and Seth Ingram.

"We had a couple of opportunities in the second half," said EHS Coach Lee Althoff. "The majority of our chances came from possession in the midfield and diagonal runs and passes. We are still early in the season anad hungry to keep improving."

The Hearts are now 0-2. EHS is back in action in the Red & Gold Invitational Saturday, taking on Centralia at 9 a.m. with the JV playing at 10:30 and again at 3 p.m. against Newton with the JV playing at 4:30.


Altamont 4, Carlyle 0

Altamont High School's soccer team hasn't been off to a start like this since 2008 when the Indians finished 13-4-2. The Indians picked up their second win and starts the season at 2-0.

The Indians beat Effingham 7-1 earlier in the week, which hasn't happened since 2011. Then moving into the St. Anthony Tournament Thursday, picked up their second win against Carlyle 4-0.

The scoring started 10 minutes into the first half with a corner kick headed by Jesus Flores to Wyatt Stone finishing. Donavon Delaney then scored outside the penalty box unassisted.

Altamont held onto its lead through the first half 2-0. Again 10 minutes into the second half Altamont scored with Flores, assisted by Jacob Crow. The Indians followed up with their final goal at 17:17 in the second half with Dylan Marble throwing into Flores who capitalized on the final goal for the day ending with a 4-0 victory.

"We outshot Carlyle 21-5 with a solid defensive effort by all 11," said Altamont Coach Jeff Walton. "Sam Childerson found a clean slate with only four shots on goal with four saves."

Altamont moves forward with action against Mount Carmel Saturday. Mount Carmel is coming off a 1-0 win over Salem.
