Hearts Fall to Green Wave, Shoes Beat Eagles In Soccer

MATTOON -- Effingham fell to Mattoon 3-1 in high school soccer competition Thursday.

Mattoon opened the day with a score as Jake Ghere connected with 32:50 left in the first half. Zachary Lensink had a penalty kick with 24:53 on the board. Ghere then hit his second score off a corner with 8:40 and the Green Wave took a 3-0 lead into the half.

Effingham's only score came on a penalty kick by Andrew Bingham with 35 seconds remaining in the contest.

Jared Minor had 21 saves for the Hearts while Chase Vogt had two saves for the Green Wave.

The Hearts drop to 4-8-3 on the season and 1-4-2 in the Apollo Conference. EHS will be back in action Monday against Olney.

In the junior varsity match, Mattoon was a 4-0 winner.

 

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis claimed a 4-1 win over Newton in action Thursday.

Caleb Ordner led the Wooden Shoes with two goals. Andy Mersman and Blake Kitten scored a goal each.

Jon Beck had six saves for the Shoes.

T-town also nabbed the junior varsity match 4-0.
