Driver's Battle Underway After First Day Of Harness Racing

ALTAMONT -- The annual driver's battle is underway as the first day of harness racing is in the books after Sunday's card was contested at the Effingham County Fair.

Wyat Avenatti took the early lead with three victories. Avenatti sat behind Mommy Said Nonono in the Carl E. Becker Big 10 3-Year-Old Filly Pace, the third race of the card.

Avenatti took Mommy Said Nonono to the win in 2:04.

He then came back in race six, the IHHA 3-Year-Old & Up Mare Trot behind El Oh Govner. The pair won in 2:05 4/5.

The third victory came in the Carl E. Becker Open Pace, Division I. Avenatti guided Fox Valley B Gump to the victory in 1:59.0.

Three other drivers picked up two wins on the card.

Jd Lewis won the opening race of the day, the Carl E. Becker Big 10 3-Year-Old Trot, Division I. He guided Cupcake Cassi to victory in 2:07 4/5.

Lewis then won with Mystical View in the Carl E. Becker Filly & Mare Pace. The pair went the distance in 2:00 2/5.

Marcus Turner was a winner in two races. Turner took Windingcreekspirit to the win in the Carl E. Becker Big 10 3-Year-Old Trot, Division II. The pair went the distance in 2:10.0.

Turner then came back in the Carl E. Becker Open Pace, Division II with Rousseau. Rousseau went the distance in 2:01 3/5.

Jordan Patton joined the group of two victories when he won behind Frontier Manard in the IHHA 3-Year-Old & Up Horse/Gelding Trot. Frontier Manard went the distance in 2:09 1/5.

Lisa Rocks gave Patton his second win in the Maiden Pace AE: ICF Nonwinners2. Lisa Rocks and Patton took the victory in 2:06 2/5.

The other two wins on the card were by Richard S. Finn and Brendan Potts.

Finn sat behind Judge For Yourself in the Carl E. Becker  Big 10 3-Year-Old Colt/Gelding Pace. The duo won in 2:03.

The final race of the day, the Open Trot, went to Brendan Potts and Mailboxmoney. The pair won with at ime of 2:11 1/5.

Avenatti finished the day with 19 points as he got three firsts, a second and a third. Patton was in a close second with 17 points on two firsts, two seconds and a third.

Drivers will receive points for first, second and third during the week and the driver with the most points at the end of the races Friday will be given the driver's award.

Racing continues today with four races on tap with a 1 p.m. post time.
