The torch relay for this summer’s Tokyo Olympics, which were delayed by a year due to the pandemic, got underway Wednesday in Japan.

The torch’s 121-day journey across the country until the opening ceremonies on July 23 began in Fukushima prefecture.

The first runner was Azusa Iwashimzu, a key player in the Japanese team that won the Women’s World Cup soccer tournament in 2011. About 10,000 runners will eventually take part in the torch relay.
