(JOE GARLAND AND MARK JONES)

Effingham area disc golfers Joe Garland and Mark Jones logged some miles over the weekend, competing in northern Illinois Saturday, then heading to Evansville, Indiana for Sunday competition.

Garland and Jones were in Morton for Saturday action in the Northwood Gold Frenzy. The EHS and Stew-Stras graduates competed in the Advanced Division.

Garland shot identical scores of 73 and 73 in his morning and afternoon rounds to finish in a tie for fifth at 146. He finished +18, but only six shots off the lead on the tough course. The winning score was +12.

Jones finished +28 for 13th place with scores of 81-75=156.

Garland and Jones headed back to Effingham for a short night's rest, then were on the road by 6am Sunday for the trip to Evansville to the Evansville Open XIII. A damp course was made worse by rain at the start of the morning round, but the rest of the day was dry, hot and humid.

Jones finished in a tie for eighth Sunday, with 57-55=112.

Garland finished in a tie for 17th, going 62-55=117. Both players shaved several shots off their first round scores in their second go of the day.

Another Effingham disc golfer, Brandon Puckett, accompanied Garland and Jones on Saturday. Playing in the Recreational Division, Puckett finished fourth with a 73-71=144 total for a +18 score.
