ALTON -- The St. Anthony High School boys bowling team finished up its season by placing 11th at the Alton Sectional Saturday. The Bulldogs end their season with a 1-8 record.
"We took another step this season on getting our program established," said Coach Phil Zaccari. "Overall we improved and were actually competing with these well established programs. I am very proud of the way our guys did not give up.
"After the first three games Saturday, we were actualy in seventh place, less than 100 points out of fifth. But as the oil on the lanes broke down in the afternoon, our less experienced bowlers had trouble adjusting. Last year we finished last and this year we moved up three spots, a definite improvement. It shows we are headed in the right directon.
"Individually, Liam Andrews started great, shooting 663 for his first three games which included a 254 and was in seventh. the afternoon was a little different but he still finished in the top 25. Neil Ritz started slow but came on at the end and James Ritz also was very steady, shooting a 613 in the morning which included a 244.
"We will really miss our seniors, Dalton Anderson and Cody Pike who stepped in and helped us become more competitive. We will especially miss James as he was intrumental in helping us get this program going. Wa have a solid core coming back next year in Liam, Neil and Zaine Resiss. We would once again like to thank the staff at K-Bowl for letting us practice and host our matches and the Effingham Men's Bowling Association for their assistance as well. Hopefully we will be able to continue this program for years to come."
Granite City won the sectional with 6,238 and Biggsville (W.C.) was second with 6,204.
