Tonalist Captures Belmont Stakes, Denies California Chrome Of Triple Crown
(Elmont, NY) -- Horse racing's Triple Crown drought will continue. Tonalist ran to victory in the Belmont Stakes from the 11th post on Saturday, denying California Chrome from becoming the 12th horse to win the Triple Crown.
The Kentucky-bred horse jockeyed by Joel Rosario held off a push from multiple horses down the stretch to win. California Chrome finished in a tie for fourth, becoming the 12th horse since 1978 to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness before failing to win the Belmont.
Affirmed in 1978 remains the last horse to win the Triple Crown, which will have its longest drought continue. Commissioner was second to Tonalist, followed by Medal Count.
