California Chrome Wins Preakness, Keeps Triple Crown Hopes Alive
(Baltimore, MD) -- The hopes of a horse racing Triple Crown are still alive after Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome won Saturday's Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. California Chrome sat in third for most the race before breaking out front in the final turn and beating Ride On Curlin to the line for the win. California Chrome is the 13th horse to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown since 1978, when Affirmed made history by winning all three. Affirmed is the last horse to accomplish the feat. Social Inclusion finished third. The Belmont Stakes will complete the Triple Crown on June 7.
The Triple Crown hopes of California Chrome could be dashed before the starting gates open at the Belmont Stakes on June 7. "USA Today" reports that the nasal strips used by the colt are currently banned by the New York State Gaming Commission. The issue could go under review.
