The Business Sector Role in Solving the Child Care Crisis: Opportunities & Success Stories

Childcare has come to the forefront of major concerns for employers as their workforce faces the challenges of insufficient childcare availability and lack of affordability.  This impacts both hiring and retention practices.  Business needs and the childcare crisis go hand in hand:  Businesses can’t succeed without productive employees, and parents can’t maintain their jobs or succeed at work without a robust early childhood system to help their families.

On January 18th, ReadyNation will explore how businesses can respond, keying in on the examples from Effingham County.  Register to hear about the successes from Stevens Industries, a manufacturing firm located in Teutopolis, who recently opened a company-owned, on-site childcare center.  You will also gain insight to the wider work of Effingham County civic leaders, business leaders, and service providers to address their community’s need for additional licensed childcare services.

“Lack of childcare, especially in rural communities, is a major barrier for employers and workers.  We applaud innovative companies like Steven’s Industries who have acknowledged this challenge and proactively responded, but we know there is more that can be done if we continue to leverage the capacity of public/private partnerships.” Courtney Yockey, Effingham County Childcare Research Committee Chairman explained.

Attendees will also hear from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, who will join the discussion speaking about concrete opportunities for businesses, including some of the limitations and challenges involved.  They will also touch on the significance of business leaders helping to raise awareness about the importance of broader public investments in childcare and early childhood education.
