Forget Me Not Resource Center at Effingham Public Library

November is Alzheimer's Awareness Month, a time to heighten awareness about Alzheimer's disease and show support for the more than 6.2 million Americans living with it.

Effingham Area Alzheimer’s Awareness and Effingham Public Library have collaborated to provide a collection of books, DVDs and reminisce kits that can help caregivers learn about their loved one’s diagnosis and the importance of caring for themselves too.

“One hidden gem that I would highly recommend people checking out is the reminisce kits.” Johnna Schultz, Assistant Director, shared. “These themed kits that have everyday items help caregivers connect with their loved ones using the senses of touch or smell.”

Materials in the Forget Me Not Resource Center were donated by Effingham Area Alzheimer’s Awareness and are available for checkout to anyone. A library card is not necessary to borrow items from this collection.

“We’ve always lived outside of the library’s boundaries. So we knew that we needed to pay for a card to be able to check out books from the library. When we approached Effingham Public Library about hosting this collection, we knew this collection needed to be as accessible as possible so we worked with them to find a solution – and we’re so grateful we did!” Shannon Nosbisch, co-founder of Effingham Area Alzheimer’s Awareness, and Dieterich resident explained. “This solution helped us put Forget Me Not Resource Centers in 7 other libraries in our region!”

The Forget Me Not Resource Center at Effingham Public Library is on the second floor in the adult nonfiction section. Materials from this collection can be checked out for two weeks. The library is open Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
