The Vandalia Grande Levee

The Vandalia Grande Levee, a celebration of the grand receptions held during the 1800s to honor government dignitaries and important visitors, will be held on Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15 at the Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site, located at 315 W. Gallatin St. in Vandalia. The family event is free and open to the public.

Festivities will begin on Friday, June 14 at 5:00 p.m. with an Old-Fashioned Ham and Bean Dinner, with ice cream sundaes and kettle corn also available on the Statehouse lawn. Lincoln reenactor Randy Duncan will be on hand. Visitors are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs to enjoy the community band and the Air Force Brass Band performances.

On Saturday, June 15, the Grande Levee continues with period arts and crafts demonstrations at the Statehouse from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., including blacksmithing, pottery and chair caning. Homemade root beer, kettle corn, ice cream sundaes, homemade lemonade and desserts will be sold. Performances throughout the day will feature Lincoln reenactor Randy Duncan, folk musician Chris Vallillo, historical story teller Brian “Fox” Ellis, along with Professor Farquhar and Polecat Anne.

The Grande Levee is co-sponsored by the Old Capitol Foundation, Vandalia Tourism Commission and Looking for Lincoln.
