Spring Lake Land College Community Choir Rehearsals to Begin

Does the cold and snowy weather having you singing the blues?  It’s time to change your tune by joining the choir!  Preparation for the spring season of the Lake Land College Community Choir begins on Tuesday, Feb. 5.  Rehearsals are held on Tuesday nights in the Lake Land College Theater from 7-9:30 p.m.

All singers age 18 and older are welcome to participate, and no audition is required.  The choir includes college students as well as area residents, forming a group of approximately 45 mixed voices.

Choir members may earn one hour of college credit for singing in the choir.  Interested singers can complete a registration form at the first rehearsal, or register online for MUS-104-11565.

Registration for college credit is not required, however, and participation in the choir is free for those who do not register.

Transportation provides one theme for this spring’s lineup.  A set of three choral works on the theme of flight includes “High Flight” by David Brunner, to a poem by Royal Canadian Air Force pilot John Magee.  Magee writes about the unimaginable delight of soaring through the sky and piloting a small plane, and Brunner’s music wheels and soars as well.  A second group of songs is more “grounded,” including the Beatles’ classic “The Long and Winding Road,” and “Seven Bridges Highway,” by the Eagles, as well as Nat King Cole’s classic “Route 66.”  American folk songs such as “Old Dan Tucker” and “The Crawdad Song” round out the program, along with contemporary sacred songs by Craig Courtney.

Nancy Caldwell, director of the choir and Lake Land music instructor, said “Choral singing has been called ‘the new exercise.’  Benefits range from decreasing blood pressure levels, to raising the singer’s self-esteem and lowering stress.  Experts also claim that singing in a group brings a positive feeling from ‘synchronizing’ with the other participants.”

Caldwell noted that the community choir has brought many residents to the Lake Land campus for the first time.  “The college welcomes members of the community to campus to explore all the many opportunities offered for education and personal growth.”

The season will conclude with a concert on Sunday, March 24, at 3 p.m. in the Theater.
