St. A Girls Third At State Golf, Boys Fourth, Altamont Players

Effngham St. Anthony captured third place at the Class 1A State Golf Tournament.

Effingham St. Anthony High School claimed third place in the Class 1A Girls State Golf Tournament during the weekend at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.

Winning the State Tournament was Mount Carmel with 604 strokes followed by Alton Marquette 640, St. Anthony 659, Rockford Boylan 670, Chicago Latin 670, Saint Viator 682, Massac County 683 and Wheaton St. Francis 687. Teams that did not qualify for day two were Charleston, Peoria Notre Dame, Rock Falls and Quincy Notre Dame.

"We did not play well on day one of State," said St. Anthony Coach Randy Blake. "We finished the day at 346. That total put us in seventh place and qualified us to play on day two.

"Addie Krouse shot 77 to lead us and Lauren Schwing shot 78. The other scores were 95 by Ellie Wegman and 96 by Madison Brummer. Non-counters were 96 by Nina Hakman and 118 by Allison Geen.

"On day two we knew it would take a good round to medal. We started the day 13 strokes behind third place Chicago Latin. Every one of the girls rose to the occasion and we fired our best round of the year, a 313 second day score to capture third place.

"Ellie Wegman had a huge comeback score of 74, 21 strokes better than day one, to lead us. Also with great rounds were Lauren Schwing with a 75 and Addie Krouse with a 77. NIna Hakman fired an 87 to round out our scoring, a team score 33 strokes better than day one."

 

Class 1A State Boys Golf

Effingham St. Anthony competed as a team at the Class 1A State Golf Tournament while Altamont had two players taking part in the meet.

The Bulldogs finished fourth as a team with a 626 total. Vandalia won the State Tournament title with a 616 followed by N. Shore Country Day 617, IC Catholic 618, St. Anthony, Oblong 641, Riverdale 645, Sherrard 654 and Monticello 664.

St. Anthony's Dakota Flaig led the way with a 38-40 -- 78 opening day and a 38-39 -- 77 second day. He finished 21st in the meet. Also scoring for the Bulldogs were Lane Ludwig 40-39 -- 79 opening day, 38-41 -- 79 second day for a 158 and a 34th place finish; Thomas Chojnicki 38-40 -- 78 opening day, 42-39 -- 81 second day for a 159 total, good for 35th place and Jonathan Willenborg had a 39-41 -- 80 on opening day, 39-40 -- 79 for a 159 total for 38th.

Joey Trupiano had a 37-38 -- 75 first day, 40-45 -- 85 second day for a 160 total and 45th place. He was tied for 10th after the first day and Michael Martelli 41-39 -- 80 first day and 42-40 -- 82 second day for a 162 and a 48th place finish.

Altamont's Kevin Hall had an 83-86 -- 169 for 71st and Tyler Stonecipher an 86-86 for a 172 total.
