Bulldogs Win Stan Adkins Charleston Golf Invite

CHARLESTON -- Effingham St. Anthony edged Mattoon by one stroke to win the Stan Adkins Charleston Boys Golf Invitational Friday.

 

The Bulldogs took the match with 322 strokes followed by Mattoon 323, Sullivan 332, Charleston 343, Paris 347, Mount Zion 348, Lawrenceville 348, Monticello 354, Effingham 368, Olney 371 and Bement 420.

"This was a great way to finish our regular season," said St. Anthony Coach Phil Zaccari. "Overall we played pretty well, grinding out a victory. We talked the other day about playing every hole because a stroke can make the difference and sure enough it happened.

"I am very proud of the way our players competed. Thomas and Jonathan played very solid rounds today. Michael is starting to play like the Michael of last season and that helped a lot today. It is a nice win that gives us momentum going into regionals."

St. Anthony will be in regional action Tuesday, October 6 at the West Bermick Golf Course in Mount Carmel along with Altamont Co-op, Teutopolis, Carmi-White County, Casey-Westfield Co-op, Cisne, Fairfield, Flora, Mount Carmel, Oblong and Robinson.

Mount Zion's Brent Hanson was medalist with a 76 followed by St. Anthony's Jonathan Willenborg 77 and Thomas Chojnicki 77. Also scoring for the Bulldogs were Michael Martelli 83 and Lane Ludwig 85. Non-counting scores were Charlie Wegman 87, Grant Nuxoll 95 and Aidan Tegeler 102.

Scoring for Effingham were Colby Haynes 90, Max Woelfer 91, Ryker Schneider 93 and Preston Latch 94. Non-counters were Nick Burgess 103 and Ethan Ritz 106.

The Hearts return to play today at the Apollo Conference Meet in Lincoln.

 

At Effingham

Effingham St. Anthony claimed a triangular girls golf meet over Effingham and Teutopolis at Cardinal Golf Couse Friday.

The Bulldogs tallied 174 followed by Effingham 180 and Teutopolis 196. Effingham's Ava Boehm was medalist with a 36.

Scoring for St. Anthony were Nina Hakman 38, Morgan Schuette 40, Cara Hakman 48 and Allison Geen 48. Maddy Brummer shot a 50.

Scoring for the Hearts were Boehm, Marah Kirk 44, Anna Sigg 50 and Anna Hirtzel 50. Annie Frost had a 50 and Ella Niebrugge a 51.

Averie Bushue led the way for Teutopolis with a 38 and that scored tied the school record, followed by Lexie Niebrugge 51, Mollie Koester 54 and Abigail Wortman 55. Also competing wre Alaina Helmink 56 and Josie Deters 57.
