St. A Boys Golf Team, EHS, St. A Girls Individuals Advance to State

St. Anthony advances to the Class A State Golf Tournament after taking second in sectional play.

Effingham St. Anthony High School finished second at its own Class 1A Golf Sectional Monday at the Effingham Country Club.

Winning was Hillsboro with a 317 followed by St .Anthony 321, Carmi-White County 327, West Frankfort 331, Nashville 341, Wateroo Gibault Catholic 346, Raymond Lincolnwood 349, Vandalia 353, Trenton Wesclin 357, McLeansboro Hamilton County 362, Campbell Hill Trico 366 and Anna-Jonesboro 377.

The top three teams along with the top 10 individuals not members of qualifying teams advance to the Class 1A State Golf Tournament.

Carmi-White County's Oakley Gee, a freshman, was medalist with a 72. Hillsboro, St. Anthony and Carmi-White County advance as teams.

Scoring for the Bulldogs were Luke Ludwig 77, Luke Flaig 79, Ben Strullmyer 82 and Nathan Schultz 83. Non-counting scores were by Zach Wortman 88 and Jayden Rios 92.

Advancing individually were Jarrett James (Chester), Tyson Elko (West Frankfort), Austyn Downen (McLeansboro Hamilton County), Chase Lack (Vandalia), DJ Villhard (Glen Carbon Father McGivney),  Wade Ruth (Mount Carmel), Kelton Harre (Nashville), Dalton Saeger (Zeigler-Royalton), Josh McGill (Vienna) and Sam Knebel (Greenville).

Not advancing was Altamont's Grant Schmidt.

Those advancing will be playing at the Class 1A State Tournament Friday and Saturday at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington.

 

Class 2A Carbondale Sectional

Effingham competed in the Class 2A Carbondale Sectional as a team but did not advance.

Winning was Charleston with 297 followed by Belleville Althoff Catholic 304, Benton 306, Herrin 310, Breese Mater Dei 316, Jacksonville 322, Waterloo 326, Mattoon 329, Alton Marquette 336, Marion 350, Troy Triad 352 and Effingham 367.

Charelston, Belleville Althoff Catholic and Benton advanced as teams while the top 10 players not members of qualifying teams also advance.

Medalist was Mattoon's Tanner Romine with a 72.

Scoring for the Hearts were Aiden Beck 86, Tate Niebrugge 89, Ben Donsbach 94 and Austin Waldhoff 98. Non-scorers were Ryker Schneider 100 and Colby Heaton 101.

"We will return everyone but Colby Heaton, who has been a joy to have around the last four years, so this was really good experience for us making it this far," said EHS Coach Jeff  Schafer. "Hopefully we will get out and work on our games a little sooner next summer and return to the sectional next year."

 

Class 1A Danville Schlarman Sectional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg's Eli Howard competed in the Class 1A Danville Schlarman Sectional but did not advance.

Advancing was Shelbyville's Will Leach with an 80.

 

Class 1A Centralia Sectional

Two Effingham girls and one St. Anthony player advanced from the Class 1A Centralia Sectional Monday.

Pinckneyville won the team title with 335 followed by Metropolis Massac County 337, Alton Marquette 339, Columbia 339, Effingham 343, Effingham St. Anthony 347, Teutopolis 375, Mount Carmel 375, McLeansboro Hamilton County 376, Bethalto Civic Memorial 383, Carterville 398 and Waltonville 453.

The top three teams advance and those were Pinckneyville, Metropolis Massac County and Alton Marquette.  The top ten individuals not members of qualifying teams advanced.

Also competing but not advancing was Altamont's Addie Smith.

Medalist was McLeansboro's Kylee Vaughan, a sophomore, with a 73.

Effingham's Abbi Burgess finished with an 80 while Ava Boehm tallied an 84. St. Anthony's Ava Wegman scored an 82 to advance.

The three golfers will compete Friday and Saturday at the Class 1A State Tournament at Red Tail Golf Course in Decatur.
