EHS Claims Fourth At Mattoon Tourney

MATTOON -- Effingham High School's boys golf squad claimed a fourth-place finish in the Mattoon Invitational Country Club Tournament Friday and Saturday. The tournament was canceled Friday and rescheduled Saturday as two separate tournaments.

Barrington won the team champioinship with a 316 followed by Quincy 320, Waterloo 320, Effingham 321, Alton 325, Edwardsville 326, Highland 326, Mattoon 328, Pekin 333, Normal West 333, Mount Zion 334, Charleston 339, Normal U-High 341, Normal Community 342, Lincoln 343, Bloomington 348, Champaign Centennial 349 and Danville 387.

Effingham's Jackson Wendling finished second behind Pekin's Nathan Taphorn who was medalist with a 72. Wendling tallied a 37-37 -- 74 and teammate Anthony Lechman who tied for third with a 37-39 -- 76.

"This was a great tournament for us," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Mattoon hosts a great event, it is too bad we didn't get Friday in. Finishing fourth, one stroke out of second, was a great showing for us.

"Jackson just played great both Friday and Saturday. Finishing second in this tournament is a great accomplishment. Anthony finished tied for third and played awesome as well. Sean Sandfier also played a great round. Teams that beat us in Champaign, we beat today. We have been as consistent as any team around."

Also scoring for the Hearts were Jake Linders 39-46 -- 85 and Anthony Barrett 44-42 -- 86. Non-scorers were Sean Sandifer 45-44 -- 89 and Reed Schafer 55-50 -- 105.
