TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham High School claimed second place at the Taylorville Boys Golf Invitational Saturday. Springfield tallied 324 points followed by Effingham 329 and Hillsboro 344.

Effingham's Jackson Wendling scored a 36-39 -- 75 for medalist honors followed by teammates Callaway Smith 42-39 -- 81, Ryan Sandifer 44-42 -- 86, Reed Schafer 44-43 -- 87 and Sean Sandifer 43-47 -- 90.

"It was tough today after playing around in the slop yesterday," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "We went to 40 degrees and 20 mph winds. I thought the kids did a great job today. All five guys made no score over a six, which for the conditions and course is excellent.

"I am so happy for Jackson winning his last regular season golf tournament with a 75. I think we have had the medalist the past three years. Callaway bounced back today to finish fifth overall and Ryan Sandifer got a medal for placing 12th with an 86 and Reed had an 87.

"We finished second and now take some momentum into regionals Tuesday at Mattoon. We hope to get Jake Linders back from his forearm issue."
