KANKAKEE -- Effingham St. Anthony High School competed in the Kankakee Bishop McNamara Irish Boys Golf Invitational Saturday and captured second place.

Winning the meet was St. Ignatius with a 327 followed by St. Anthony 330,  St. Laurance 333, St. Rita 342, Brother Rice 359, Mount Carmel 359, Reed-Custer 401, Bishop McNamara 421 and De La Salle 460.

St. Laurance's Jordan Velez was medalist with a 72. St. Anthony's Garrett Hixenbaugh took second with a 36-38 -- 74. Jared Hutchison was seventh with a 43-39 -- 82. Also scoring were Connor Greene 42-43 -- 85 and Jeff Niebrugge 43-46 -- 89. Non-counters were Nate Schmidt 46-44 -- 90 and Sam Wortman 47-45 -- 92.

"Between the wind, rain and weather delays, we hung in there," said St. Anthony Coach Phil Zaccari. "The greens at the Elks Golf Course are very undulated and fast. It took us a few holes to adjust. Garrett adjusted the quickest placing second. He needs to work on finishing his round. He is really close to putting up a very low number.

"Jared continued his recent good play. As a team though, we just had way too many big numbers. The double and triple bogies just hurt us."

At Salem

In girls golf, St. Anthony defeated Salem, 187-213. Madison Bushue was medalist with a 43.

Also scoring were Kyla Burton 44, Kelsea Dust 47 and Abbie Schmidt 49.
