Falcons Lock Up QB Ryan With Five-Year Extension

(Flowery Branch, GA) -- Atlanta Falcons signal-caller Matt Ryan is the latest franchise quarterback to get a lucrative contract extension. Ryan has agreed to a five-year deal, reportedly worth more than $103-million, with 59-million guaranteed. Ryan says he's grateful to know he'll be in Atlanta for years to come.

Ryan had one year left on his rookie contract. The Ravens' Joe Flacco, Packers' Aaron Rodgers, Cowboys' Tony Romo and Lions' Matthew Stafford have also inked new deals since last season. Ryan threw for more than 4,700 yards and 32 touchdowns for the Falcons last season. Atlanta drafted Ryan out of Boston College in 2008.

 

Cardinals Sign Abraham, Winston

(Glendale, AZ) -- The Cardinals have signed linebacker John Abraham to a two-year deal and tackle Eric Winston to a one-year contract. Abraham is a 14-year veteran who is the NFL’s active leader with 122 career sacks. The 35-year-old led the Falcons with 10 sacks and set a franchise record with six forced fumbles last season. Winston started all 16 games at right tackle last season for the Chiefs.

 

Brady, Patriots Trying To Move On As Camp Begins

(Foxboro, MA) -- New England Patriots players are showing solidarity in an effort to move on from former teammate Aaron Hernandez's arrest on murder charges.  Quarterback Tom Brady says the start of training camp offers a chance to regroup and put the emphasis back on the field.

Patriots veterans reported for camp Thursday in Foxboro, one day after head coach Bill Belichick addressed the media about Hernandez. Belichick said he was stunned when he first learned of the tight end's arrest and offered condolences to the victim's family. Hernandez is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd last month.

 

Gators Remove Hernandez Stadium Brick

(Gainesville, FL) -- The University of Florida is taking steps to distance itself from former tight end Aaron Hernandez. Workers were out with a jackhammer Thursday morning to remove a brick outside the stadium with Hernandez's name on it. The brick was part of a display featuring the names of Gators All-Americans. Hernandez is facing first-degree murder charges in the shooting death of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd.
