The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs beat the Houston Texans 34-20 Thursday night in the NFL's season-opener.

They played in Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium before a  socially-distanced crowd of about 17,000, at 22 percent capacity because of the pandemic. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 211 yards and three touchdowns.

The Kansas City Chiefs stood along the goal lines before Thursday night’s game against the Houston Texans during “Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing,” considered the Black national anthem, and the national anthem, while the Texans stayed in the locker room. Before kickoff, the teams lined up together and linked arms as social justice messages like “End Racism” were shown on the scoreboard. A moment of silence for the fight for equality was held, during which some boos could be heard.

Dolphins Will Stay In Locker Room During National Anthem

The Miami Dolphins players and coach Brian Floresreleased a video Thursday saying they'll protest racial injustice by staying in the locker room during the national anthem before their opening game Sunday at New England, as well as during “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” considered the Black national anthem, which will also be sung before every NFL game this weekend. In it, players say phrases about the social justice movement, and Flores says, “We’ll just stay inside.”
