Congratulations are due today to retired Effingham Hearts Football Coach Mike McDonald.

Coach Mac has been inducted into the 2019 Hall of Fame class of the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association.

The induction ceremony will be Saturday, March 30 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Champaign.

McDonald served as varsity coach of the Hearts for 23 years after several seasons as an assistant at EHS. His teams won 125 games and qualified for the playoffs 13 times including one stretch of 10 playoff teams in 11 seasons.

Coach Mac only thought he was finished with coaching, though. For the past two seasons, he has returned and worked as an assistant with varsity coach Brett Hefner, helping coach the freshman and sophomore teams.

McDonald and wife Gena, who is a teacher in the Unit 40 system, have four children, Andy, Jenny, Megan and Nate.
