EHS Frosh/Soph Football Team Nabs Win

Effingham High School's freshman/sophomore football team downed Mattoon, 22-14 in action Monday.

The Hearts tallied a touchdown in the opening quarter and led 22-8 at halftime. Mattoon scored a final touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Dalton Fox caught a 27 yard pass from Nate Thompson for the opening quarter touchdown. Jakob Logan ran the point after.

Then in the second period, Logan took the handoff and went 19 yards for a score. The point after failed. Mattoon pulled within 16-8 on a 19 yard pass with the point after run good. The Hearts pushed the lead up to 22-8 when Holden Lewis pulled in a 13 yard pass from Thompson. Logan ran the extra point.

The Green Wave finshed out on an eight yard run in the final period.

Offensively, Thompson connected on five of nine passes for 80 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Noah Jones missed on his lone pass.

Fox had three receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown. Edgar Castillo had one catch for 12 yards. Lewis had one for 13 yards and a touchdown.

Logan had six carries for 83 yards and a touchdown. Keegan Baker had eight for 48 yards, Castillo three for seven, Damon Kalber two for -1, Gabe Kihne, one for eight, Thompson two for -16 and Jones one for -1.

Lewis had one kickoff return for nine yards and Chase Mathis had one for 19 yards.

Defensively, Lewis had 14 tackles, Mathis 12 tackles, Chase Woomer nine tackles and one interception, Shawn Cochran eight tackles, Zac Slifer five tackles, Gunner Franklin two tackles, Trevon Benavides two tackles, Logan three tackles and three interceptions, Eric Sills two tackles and Jon Zerrusen two tackles.

The Hearts are 4-4 and will finish the season at Carterville Saturday.
