Effingham Claims F/S Football Win (Revised)

Effingham High School claimed its third victory of the season in freshman/sophomore football action.

The Hearts defeated Charleston 20-14 Monday evening. Charleston held a 14-12 first half lead but the Hearts scored a touchdown in the third period.

Keegan Baker scored on a four yard run for the Hearts. The point after pass failed. Dalton Fox pulled in a 23 yard pass from Nate Thompson. Again the point after failed.

Jakob Logan then tallied what proved to be the winning touchdown on a four yard run in the third quarter. The point after was a Thompson pass to Gabe Kihne.

Thompson connected on eight of 17 passes for 136 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Noah Jones hit one of one for five yards.

Fox pulled in two passes for 39 yards and one touchdown. Jordan Elsasser caught two for 43 yards. Jett Volpi had two for 33 yards, Edgar Castillo two for 22 yards and Kalen Reardon one for four yards.

Logan had 16 carries for 100 yards and a touchdown. Baker had nine carries for 36 yards and a touchdown. Edgar Castillo had six for 32 yards, Damon Kalber two for nine yards, Kihne, 2 for seven yards, Thompson two for five and Mitchell Strohl one for one.

Zac Slifer had 13 tackles, Shawn Cochran seven and one forced fumble, Holden Lewis six tackles, Gunner Franklin five tackles, Chase Mathis five tackles, Trevon Benavides four tackles and one forced fumble, Logan four tackles and Derek Lemna a fumble recovery.

The Hearts are now 3-4 on the season.
