Hearts Set Single-Game Scoring Record in Downing Mahomet-Seymour; High School Football Scores - Friday 9-28-2018

The Effingham Hearts set a single-game scoring record in defeating the Mahomet-Seymour Bulldogs Friday night, 64-28. The contest was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

The win marked the fourth straight for the Hearts, improving their season record to 4-2. It also improved their Apollo Conference record to 3-1.

Effingham scored on a one-yard plunge by quarterback Landon Wolfe with 4:51 left in the first quarter, a 55-yard pass from Wolfe to Tristin Duncan with 8:43 remaining in the second quarter, a 10-yard run by Kendall Ballman with 7:36 remaining before halftime, a 31-yard catch and run by Nathan Shackelford with 1:54 left in the second quarter, a 15-yard run by Ballman with 11:08 left iin the third quarter, a 71-yard pass to Ballman with 8:44 remaining in the third quarter, a safety with 4:17 left in the third quarter, a six-yard run by Duncan with 26 seconds left in the third quarter, a 29-yard interception by Luke Spencer, and an 85-yard kickoff return by Ballman with 7:59 left in the game.

The 64 points for the Hearts beats the 63 points scored in a win over Lincoln last season and in a win over Flora in 1987.

Effingham totaled 399 yards rushing and receiving; 151 yards on the ground, 248 yards through the air.

Mahomet-Seymour had 259 yards rushing and receiving and actually outgained the Hearts on the ground with 152 yards along with 107 yards through the air.

The Hearts scored so quickly on its drives that the Bulldogs actually ran many more plays; 68 to 42.

Kendall Ballman had a great performance for Effingham, rushing 14 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns; catching two passes for 80 yards and a score; and returning two kickoffs for 111 yards and a touchdown.

Hearts quarterback Landon Wolfe threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns, going 12-for-19 on the night with one interception.

In addition to Ballman, receivers included Shackelford who caught four passes for 54 yards and a score, Duncan who had three catches for 91 yards and a touchdown, Cameron Kalber with two catches for 15 yards, and Jacob Stoneburner with a grab for eight yards.

Also carrying the ball besides Ballman were Jakob Logan with five rushes for 27 yards, Duncan with the six-yard touchdown run, Shackelford with a 27-yard run, and Wolfe with two rushes for six yards and the touchdown.

Other stats: Dawson Whitten punted once for 23 yards; Dylan Bushur had a 21-yard punt return; Spencer had the 29-yard interception for a touchdown; Ivan Angel had 10 kickoffs for 414 yards; Gage Franklin had a fumble recovery; and Parker Wolfe had a 22-yard kickoff return.

Jordan Veldman led Mahomet-Seymour with 102 yards rushing and a touchdown. Quarterback Dawson Finch had 12 rushes for -20 yards but two touchdowns. Clay Hubble rushed 10 times for 70 yards. Finch tried 24 passes, completing seven for 107 yards and a touchdown with one interception.
