EHS Edges Mattoon in Sophomore Football

Effingham High School took a 6-0 first quarter lead and went on to down Mattoon 28-20 in sophomore football action Monday evening.

The Hearts tallied two touchdowns in the second quarter for a 22-6 halftime lead. EHS then had to hold off the Green Wave in the second half.

Nathan Shackelford connected on eight of 12 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown. Kyle Phillips pulled in four passes for 111 yards and a touchdown.

In rushing, Logan Brown had 15 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown while Tyler Marschewski had 20 carries for 58 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensive leaders included Parker McGee and Logan Brown with seven tackles each and Ben Schuette with five tackles. Luke Spencer and Hayden Diveley had four tackles each.
