St. Louis Rams third-year wide receiver Stedman Bailey was shot Tuesday night and is in critical but stable condition in a Florida hospital.

Bailey was wounded twice in the head and is expected to undergo surgery Wednesday, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The Rams released a statement, saying, "We are aware Stedman Bailey was involved in an incident this evening. We have spoken with Stedman and he is in the hospital in critical, but stable, condition. We are gathering facts about the situation and will provide updates as we learn more."

Bailey was sitting in a car with several people when he was shot, a source confirmed to ESPN. The driver of the vehicle was shot multiple times while attempting to shield children in the car from bullets. His wounds are more serious.

Multiple reports said Bailey was in Miami Gardens, Florida, when he was shot. Bailey went to high school in the Miami area.

Earlier this month, the NFL suspended Bailey four games for violation of its policy on substance abuse. Because he was suspended, Bailey was not made available to the media, but he took to his Instagram account to post an extended apology in which he referred to his choices as "idiotic" and "disgraceful."

Manning to Wear Walking Cast

Call it doctor's orders. Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning will wear a walking cast on his injured left foot for the next week and will miss, at minimum, the next two games after getting a second opinion on a partially torn plantar fascia.

Manning, who missed the Broncos' 17-15 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday, was in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday to consult with Dr. Robert Anderson, a noted orthopedic surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle injuries. Manning returned to Denver on Tuesday and met with Broncos coach Gary Kubiak, as well as the team's medical staff.

Anderson's recommendation, according to the Broncos, is for Manning to wear a cast for the next week and, after the cast is removed, begin the next round of treatment on the injury.

In a statement, Kubiak said: "Peyton and I had a good visit [Tuesday], and we've got a plan in place for his recovery. His foot will be in a cast for at least a week, but he'll be able to be part of meetings and do some workouts with the rest of the team. We expect him to be unavailable for at least a couple of games. We'll proceed from there and will continue to support him as he does everything he can to get healthy.''

The Broncos face the New England Patriots on Sunday night at Sports Authority Field at Mile High and play the Chargers in San Diego the following week.

Chicago Bears: Chicago has two viable options at emergency quarterback. The most conservative approach is to use Matt Forte. The Bears have run a variation of the Wildcat in recent years, with Forte receiving the snap in shotgun formation. The Bears almost always run out of this package, but Forte did attempt one pass in 2011. Another alternative is tight end Zach Miller, who played quarterback for four years in college at Nebraska-Omaha. Miller was 305-of-501 passing for 4,096 yards and 26 touchdown at Nebraska-Omaha. He began his collegiate career as a walk-on quarterback at the University of Nebraska. -- Jeff Dickerson

St. Louis Rams: The Rams' emergency quarterback is punter Johnny Hekker. Hekker played quarterback at Bothell (Wash.) High and fakes with him throwing the ball were a staple of his time at Oregon State and now with the Rams. At Oregon State, Hekker was 4-of-5 for 35 yards. Since entering the NFL in 2012, Hekker has completed six of nine passes for 99 yards and a touchdown for a passer rating of 140.5. Although he doesn't get quarterback reps often during the practice week, he does take the occasional snap and work on the side sometimes just in case. -- Nick Wagoner
