Area Teams, Individuals Advance To Cross Country Sectionals

NEWTON -- Local area teams and individuals advanced from the Class 1A Newton Cross Country Regional Saturday and will head into sectional action this coming Saturday.

In the girls meet at Newton, the host squad along with Effingham St. Anthony, Dieterich and Neoga will advance as teams along with a runner from North Clay (Louisville).

Winning the meet was Newton's Layna Marshall with a time of 19:59.8. Also finishing in the top 10 from Newton was Alexis Hetzer 10th in 22:05.9 and from St. Anthony was Stacie Vonderheide who took sixth in 21:21.7.

Newton won the meet with 42 points followed by Robinson 64, St. Anthony 71, Fairfield 84, Salem 107, Dieterich 144 and Neoga 156. All seven of those teams advance along with the top five runners not members of those teams.

Scoring for the Eagles were Marshall, Hetzer; Natalie Kistner 13th in 22:25, Ella Radtke 15th in 22:40 and Shay Bennett 18th in 23:12.

Brooke Koelm from North Clay will go as an individual after finishing 11th in 22:07.2.

In the boys meet, Newton also claimed the championship with 30 points followed by St. Anthony 57, Fairfield 85, Robinson 106, Cumberland 123, Salem 152, Dieterich 176, Mount Carmel 225 and Grayville 259.

Newton, St.. Anthony, Cumberland and Dieterich advance as teams along with Fairfield, Robinson and Salem. Advancing as individuasl from the area were Owen Ayers of North Clay ninth in 17:51.8 and Altamont's Hayden Summers who finished 15th in 18:17.5.

Newton's Clay Bergbower took first in 16:42.5. Also scoring for Newton were Luke Weber fifth in 17:06.9, Nick Shamhart sixth in 17:23.8, Luis Zavala 11th in 17:56.9 and Ben Street 14th in 18:06.6.

The teams and individuals will now advance to the St. Joseph-Ogden Sectional this coming Saturday with the girls running at 10 a.m. and the boys at 11 a.m.

Class 1A Shelbyville Regional

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City competed in the Shelbyville Regional Saturday.

One runner will advance for CHBC from the boys meet. August Cosart finished 27th in 17:34.55 and will head to sectional action at St. Joseph-Ogden this coming Saturday.

Decatur St.Teresa won the boys meet with 48 points followed by Tuscola 73, Tolono Unity 124, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 124, Monticello 132, Shelbyville 155, Cerro Gordo 155, Clinton 169, Litchfield 214, Carlinville 230, Sullivan 280, Gillespie 362 and Argenta-Oreana 387.

Josiah Hortin of Tuscola won the meet in 15:19.90.

In the girls meet, Tolono Unity won with 26 points followed by Monticello 72, Shelbyville 82, Clinton 104, Litchfield 130, Decatur St. Teresa 148, Argentea-Oreana 208, Carlinville 213, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 220 and Cerro Gordo 261.

Mabry Bruhn of Monticello was the individual winner with a time of 17:17.43.

Class 2A Olney Regional

Effingham High School captured the championship of the girls regional while the boys squad finished fifth. Both teams advance to sectional action.

The Hearts tallied 45 points followed by Champaign Central 78, Mahomet-Seymour 86, Olney 98, Champaign Centennial 111, Ubana 1238, Charleson 148, Mattoon 210 and Mount Vernon 226.

Olney's Tatum David won the meet with a time of 17:17.51.

Effingham's scorers included second place Jessica Larsen in 19:17.53, sixth place Haddie Hill in 20:24.16, 10th place Baylee Sumemrs in 20:45.48, 11th place Audrey Wagoner in 20;48.28 and 21st place Morgan Springer in 21:57.09.

The top six teams and top five individuals not members of those teams, will advance to sectional action.

Mount Vernon won the boys meet with 51 points followed by Champaign Central 71, Urbana 94, Mahomet-Seymour 100, Effingham 112, Rantoul 131, Champaign Centennial 137, Charleston 235 and Davnille 251.

WInning the individual championship was Champaign Centennial's Aaron Hendron in 15:54.36.

Scoring for the Hearts were Garrett Wagoner seventh in 16:54.34, Andrew Donaldson 10th in 17:17.90, Alex Gordon 17th in 17:38.54, Aaron HIll 37th in 18;33.18 and Adam Flack 41st in 18:47.60.

Effingham will head to the Class 2A Chatham Glenwood Sectional this coming Saturday with the girls race at 11 a.m. and the boys race at noon.
