Two Area Boys, One Area Girl Advance to State

Cross country runners competing at Mid-America Motorworks.

Two area boys and one area girl advanced to the State Finals in high school cross country Saturday.

The Class 1A Sectional for boys and girls was hosted by St. Anthony and was run at Mid-America Motorworks in Effingham.

Competing from the area were St. Anthony, Teutopolis, Cumberland and Newton as girls teams and three runners from Altamont, Neoga and North Clay (Louisville).

For the boys competing were teams from St. Anthony, Cumberland, Teutopolis and Neoga and individual runners from Newton and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

Winning the girls sectional was Monticello with 53 points followed by Tolono Unity 66, St. Joseph-Ogden 110, Champaign St. Thomas More 116, Urbana University 132, Marshall 161, Shelbyville 211, Decatur St. Teresa 261, Litchfield 290, Staunton 317, Newton 361, Auburn 372, Teutopolis 376, Robinson 387, Cumberland 391, Paxton-Buckley-Loda 434, St. Anthony 436, Carlinville 484, Piasa Southwestern 485, Paris 498 and Tuscola 505.

Lydia Roller of Staunton won the individual title with a time of 17:48.11.

The lone area runner advancing was Cumberland's Jasmyn Dittamore, a junior, who finished 19th with a time of 19:46.

Two area runners came out of the boys race. St. Anthony's Brian Dust, a junior, and Cumberland's Michael Carpenter, a senior, both advanced as individuals. Dust finished 11th in 16:44 while Carpenter was 15th in 16:58.

Winning the team title was Monticello with 42 points followed by Urbana University 96, St. Joseph-Ogden 158, Tolono Unity 162, Robinson 173, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 198, Paxton-Buckley-Loda 211, St. Anthony 252, Marshall 281, Shelbyville 327, Carlinville 328, Champaign St. Thomas More 335, Bismarck-Henning 337, Cumberland 355, Litchfield 378, Decatur St. Teresa 387, Auburn 443, Teutopolis 444, Lawrenceville 471, Mount Carmel 481, Alton Marquette 543 and Neoga 593.

Winning the individual championship was Ryder James of Paxton-Buckley-Loda with a time of 15:55.

In the Class AA Decatur MacArthur Sectional, the Effingham girls competed as a team while the boys had one runner.

In the boys meet, Alfredo Lopez finished 92nd with a time of 17:38.35.

Mascoutah won the boys meet with 114 points followed by Chatham Glenwood 121, Troy Triad 140, Springfield 149, Centralia 173, Waterloo 195, Marion 200, Olney 213, Carbondale 244, Highland 248, Rochetesr 280, Mattoon 325, Mount Zion 330, Jacksonville 337, Danville 344, Taylorville 350, Bethalto Civic Memorial 389 and Charleston 450.

Winning was Centralia's Brooks Harlan with a time of 15:16.73.

In the girls meet, Chatham Glenwood won with 69 points followed by HIghland 92, Mount Zion 109, Carbondale 161, Mascoutah 169, Springfield 170, Troy Triad 194, Charleston 199, Olney 206, Waterloo 251, Bethalto Civic Memorial 281, Rochester 318, Columbia 329, Mattoon 340, Effingham 389, Jacksonville 399 and Centralia 418.

Winning the girls meet was Olney's Tatum David in 16:33.36.

The top four teams advance from sectional to state along with the top seven runners not members of qualitying teams.

The State Meet will be Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria. The Class 1A girls will run at 9 a.m. followed by the boys at 10. The Class 2A girls will run at 11 a.m. followed by the boys at noon.
