Two Local Runners Head To State In Cross Country

Only two area runners advanced to the State Cross Country Meet this coming Saturday at Detwiler Park in Peoria.

Altamont's Andrew Sharp advances in the boys' meet while Leah Hutchinson, from Cumberland, will run in the girls' meet.

Sharp competed in the Class 1A Effingham St. Anthony Sectional last Saturday and advanced as an individual, not a member of a qualifying team. Sharp took seventh place with a time of 15:57.99. The top five runners were Jake Brown (Mount Zion) in 15:13.35, Jesse Hahne (Schlarman), 15:33.18, Nick Hess (St. Thomas More), 15:33.78,  Curtis Reed (Mount Zion), 15:47.12 and Mohammed Hosseini (Mount Zion), 15:50.38.

Champaign St Thomas More won the team champoinship and advances as a team along with Mount Zion, Shelbyville, Monticello and Tolono Unity. The top five teams and top seven individuals, not members of qualifying teams, advance.

Advancing individually, along with Sharp, were Hahne (Schlarman), Blake Hale (Robinson), 15:58.06, Madison Velcheck (St. Teresa), 16:00.55, Jon Davis (Oakwood), 16:08.38,  Eric Ponder (Tuscola), 16:10.09 and Arch Robison (Urbana University) 16:11.03.

Hutchinson took 16th place in the girls meet with a time of 19:25.53. She advanced along with Kady Mahaffey (Maroa-Forsyth) 18:52.08, Megan Bailey (Mount Zion) 19:09.89, Colleen Madden (Carlinville) 19:24.37, Molley Yockey (Shelbyville) 19:28.59, Mickey Shook (Robinson) 19:32.42 and Lea Viano (Carlinville) 19:42.49.

Finishing first was Rachel Devereux of Decatur St. Teresa in 18:11.20.

The advancing teams are Decatur St. Teresa, Monticello, St. Joseph-Ogden, Champaign St. Thomas More and Tolono Unity.

Class 2A Decatur MacArthur Sectional

Four Effingham runners competed in the sectional at Decatur MacArthur Saturday but failed to advance to the state meet.

Leighton Lark, Gary Damron, Patrick Siner and Leevi Baker competed for the Hearts. Winning the meet was Charleston's Riley McInerney with a time of 14:53. Advancing individuals were Johnny Leverenz (Danville) 15:14, Samuel Welbourne (Jerseyville) 15:15, Chris Martin (Mascoutah) 15:22, Josh Rodenberg (Waterloo) 15:30,  Murphy Affolder (Mascoutah) 15:44, David Modart (Mount Vernon) 15:45 and Joh Davis (Lincoln) 15:55.

Schools advancing were Mahomet-Seymour which captured the team title with 72 points followed by Springfield 98, Chatham Glenwood 139, Carbondale 174 and Charleston 177.
