EHS Girls Claim Apollo Conference C.C. Title

Effingham girls cross country team claimed first place in the Apollo Conference Meet.

MATTOON -- With a sixth place finish last season, the Effingham High School girls cross country team made a big turn-around this year, winning the Apollo Conference cross country meet Tuesday.

The Hearts edged out Charleston for the title with 56 points while the Trojans tallied 60. Following the top two were Salem 78, Mattoon 86, Taylorville 87 and Mount Zion 98.

Effingham's Miranda Fox led the way with a fourth place finish in 19:53.19. Shayna Phillips took sixth in 20:13.45 while Alexis Monnet was ninth in 20:25.83. Meredith Kull captured the 12th spot in 20:40.67 and Brianna Schmidt took 25th with a time of 22:42.69 edging out the final Charleston scorer who finished 27th.

Winning the meet was Taylorville's Anna Lowry with a time of 18:53.74.

In the boys meet, Effingham finished sixth with 139 points. Charleston won the meet with 44 points followed by Taylorville 53, Mattoon 62, Salem 102, Mount Zion 109 and Effingham.

Taylorville's Luke Sloan picked up the individual title with a time of 15:54.59. Charleston then captured the next three spots.

Effingham's Jacob Donaldson finished 17th in 17:28.89. Also scoring for the Hearts were Patrick Siner 24th in 17:50.13, Josh McCammon 31st in 18:35.93, CJ Schmidt 33rd in 18:39.35 and Bett Koester 34th in 18:46.11.
