On a night when senior Josie Zerrusen became just the sixth Effingham Hearts' girls player to score 1,000 points for her career, the Effingham girls posted 64-56 Senior Night win over the OlneyTigers.

The game, the last regular season contest for Effingham, was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.  The game was also videotaped and will be available on the website in the next few days.

Effingham, which had lost three of four games after winning its first 24 of the season, burst out of the gate in this contest, pulling away to as much as a 17-point lead in the second quarter before Olney came storming back to pull within 37-26 at halftime.

Olney kept coming in the third quarter, outscoring the Hearts 17-10 to pull within four at the end of the period, 47-43. Effingham regrouped down the stretch, hitting big foul shots and outpointing Olney in the fourth period 17-13 to claim the eight-point victory.

Effingham made nine of 10 shots in the first quarter, but made 11 of 27 for the rest of the contest, still finishing at 54% for the contest on 20 of 37 shooting.  Effingham made a living at the foul line, hitting 22 of 29 from the charity stripe.  The Hearts committed 15 turnovers, grabbed 26 rebounds, and made two of 10 three-pointers.

Olney made 18 of 44 shots for 41%, hit 13 of 18 foul shots, turned the ball over 12 times, but grabbed just 17 rebounds while making seven of 19 threes.

Zerrusen led Effingham with 20 points on five of nine shooting from the field and nine of 11 from the line, along with nine rebounds and four assists.  Jantzen Michael scored 13 points on five of nine shooting and Lauren Stephenson scored 12 points with six rebounds and four assists.

"Congrats tonight to Josie who scored her 1,000th point with 2:52 left in the first quarter knocking down a three-pointer," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "The kids played much better tonight. A very balanced first half. We got everyone going tonight so this should be some good momentum heading into regionals."

Marley Miller led Olney with 14 points, while Kelsey Shipman and Taylor Rauch each added 10 points.

The Hearts improved to 26-3 for the regular season, and head into Class 3A Regional play Tuesday night at Effingham against the winner of the Mattoon/Charleston game Monday night.

Zerrusen scored two points and then hit a three-pointer that put her past the 1,000-point mark for her career.  The other Hearts on the list are Blair Hardiek, Kristin Kohnert, Jeanie James, Kim Traub and Tatiana Colclasure.
