St. Anthony, Stewardson-Strasburg Headed to State

The Stewardson-Strasburg eighth-grade squad claimed the sectional championship and will be heading to the Class 8-1A State Tournament.

The Stewardson-Strasburg Comets are headed to the Class 8-1A State Tournament Saturday after winning their own sectional championship Wednesday night, defeating the Sigel St. Michael Sharpshooters 44-36.  Stew-Stras, now 16-6, will take on undefeated Annawan, 24-0 on the season, at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bartonville Limestone High School.

Stew-Stras took a 24-18 first half lead and outscored Sigel St. Michael 8-2 in the third quarter. Thies led the winners with 21 points while Kessler added 14. St. Michael was led by Althoff with 13. St. Michael ends at 13-12.

St. Anthony claimed the St. Elmo Sectional and will be headed to the Class 8-2A State Tournament Saturday.

Also headed to State Saturday is St. Anthony.  The Bullpups won their 8-2A sectional at St. Elmo, defeating Nokomis 59-52.  St. Anthony, now 16-7, will play Carthage (23-1) 10 a.m. Saturday at Downs Tri-Valley High School in the 8-2A State Tournament.

Alex Deters led the way with 20 points while Cade Walsh tallied 14 for the Bullpups and Alex Beesley chipped in with 12.

Teutopolis lost to Marshall 38-35 in the 8-3A Sectional at Sullivan to end its season. T-town held a 19-12 halftime lead but Marshall came back with a 14-7 third quarter run and outscored T-town 12-9 in the final period to pull out the three-point victory.

Eric Kremer tallied 15 points to lead T-town while Ethyn Dust added 10.

Effingham lost its 8-4A Sectional to Danville North Ridge 63-49 at Tolono Unity to end its campaign. Danville North Ridge stepped out to a 17-5 opening quarter lead and had the momentum the rest of the way.

Moore tallied 21 for the winners while Williams added 14 and Robinson 12. Leading the Mustangs were Hull with 23 and Sandifer with 14. Sandifer had three steals while Hull had seven rebounds and Hill four rebounds.

The Mustangs end the season at 18-5.
