Bullpups, Sharpshooters Suffer Defeats at Seventh Grade State Tournaments

Both the St. Anthony Bullpups and the Sigel St. Michael Sharpshooters suffered defeats in quarterfinal action at their respective 7th grade state boys basketball tournaments Saturday morning.

At the 7-2A Tournament in Clinton, Elmwood defeated St. Anthony 51-42.  

The first quarter was nip-and-tuck with Elmwood holding a 13-12 lead at period's end.  Elmwood outscored the Bullpups 12-7 in the second period, though, to hold a 25-19 halftime lead.  Each team scored 12 points in the third period leaving the score at 37-31 Elmwood.  Each time the Bullpups made a run, the Trojans would respond with points of their own.  St. Anthony was also battling foul troubles.  Elmwood made big foul shots down the stretch, outscoring the Bullpups 14-11 in the final period to come away with a nine-point victory.

Quinton Milleville led St. Anthony with 14 points including three three-pointers.  Bryson Wall scored seven points, Jacob Blanchette and Alex Brandenburger each scored six points, Ben Strullmyer four points, Colin Koester three points, and Blake Niebrugge two points.  

Other team members are Zach Wortman, Nathan Schultz, Dylan Guy, Andrew Nashed, Braeden Quandt, Ben Mendella, Wade Wenthe, and Will Niebrugge.

St. Anthony had just won the sectional Friday night and then had to be in Clinton to play at 10am at the state quarterfinals.

The Bullpups close out their season with a 19-2 record.

At the 7-1A Tournament in St. Joseph, Gifford defeated St. Michael 44-30.

In a defensive-minded first quarter, St. Michael held a 9-5 lead.  Gifford, though, outscored the Sharpshooters 14-5 in the second period to hold a 19-18 lead at halftime.  The third quarter was the difference in this game, as Gifford outscored St. Michael 15-4 to extend their lead to 34-22.  Gifford outpointed St. Michael 10-8 in the final period to post the 14-point win.

Zach Wolke led St. Michael in scoring with 11 points.  Also for the Sharpshooters: Mitchell Cornell eight, Charlie Hoene and Paul Probst four points apiece, and Asa Hanson three points.

Other St. Michael team members are Cody Hill, Connor Walk, Mason Birdsong and Kaden Fearday.

The Sharpshooters close their season with a 20-3 record.
