MATTOON -- Effingham Junior High School captured the championshp of the Class 8-4A Mattoon Boys Basketball Regional Thursday evening.

The Mustangs edged Champaign Edison 46-43. Edison took a 10-6 opening quarter lead but the Mustangs came back with a 16-7 second period run to lead 22-17 at halftime. The two teams played to an 8-8 third quarter tie. Edison came back with a 10-5 fourth quarter to tie the score at 35-35, sending the game into overtime. In the overtime period, Effingham ouitscored Edison 11-8 to pull out the victory.

Hull tallied 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds and had five steals for the winners. Sandifer tallied 12 points and Levitt had seven boards. Effingham improves to 18-4.

The Mustangs will now meet either Champaign Franklin or Danville North Ridge in the Tolono Unity Sectional Wednesday at 6 p.m. Those two teams play tonight for the Champaign Franklin regional title.

At St. Elmo

Effingham St. Anthony captured a regional championship at the Class 8-2A St. Elmo Regional Thursday evening.

The Bullpups defeated Dieterich 41-25. The Bullpups jumped out to a 9-2 opening quarter lead and led 18-12 at halftime. They had a 23-13 second half run for the victory.

Nuxoll and Utz tallied nine points each while Beesley, Deters and Walsh tallied six each in even scoring for St. Anthony. Dieterich was led by Radloff with 12 and Campton with eight.

 At Sullivan

Teutopolis moved into the championship game of the Class 8-3A Sullivan Sectional with a win Thursday evening.

The Wooden Shoes handily defeated Tuscola East Prairie 56-35. T-town stepped out to a 17-11 opening quarter lead and had a 26-11 second half run.

Eric Kremer and Lee Hardiek provided the one-two scoring punch for T-town with 16 points each.

Shelbyville Moulton opened the evening with a 47-24 win over Arthur.

T-town will now face Shelbyville Moulton Monday for the regional champoinship at 6 p.m.

At Sullivan

At Strasburg

Stewardson-Strasburg claimed a victory over Pana Sacred Heart in its own Class 8-1A regional Thursday evening.

Stew-Stras downed Pana Sacred Heart 49-21. Stew-Stras advances to the championship game Monday against either Cowden-Herrick or Windsor at 6 p.m. Those two teams play today at 4:30 p.m.

Stew-Stras jumped out to a 17-4 opening quarter lead and led 32-10 at halftime. Kessler tallied 17 and Kramer 10 as Stew-Stras improved to 14-6.

Two games were scheduled at Paris Mayo. Casey-Westfield was to face Red Hill (Bridgeport) while Jasper County faced Marshall. No scores have been reported on those games.

 

In other games Monday, Sigel St. Michael will face Palestine for the championship of the Class 8-1A Effingham Sacred Heart Regional. Game time is 6 p.m.
