Paris Downs Dieterich, Newton Claims Girls Win

DIETERICH -- Paris High School had two good quarters for a 52-46 non-conference girls basketball victory over Dieterich Tuesday evening.

Dieterich took a 13-10 opening quarter lead but Paris came back with a 12-5 second period run then outscored the Maroons 14-12 in the third period to lead 36-30 going into the final quarter. The two teams played to a 16-16 final period tie.

Madelyn Brouwer tallied 20 and Kennedy Gladding 10 for the winners. Dieterich was led by Courtney Flach with 16 points, Mallorie Vahling with 11 points, 17 rebounds, four assists and five steals and Rachel Schmidt with 10 points.

The Maroons drop to 6-13 on the season.

At Newton

Newton hosted Palestine/Hutsonville in a Little Illini Conference makeup game and claimed a 58-34 victory.

The Eagles jumped out to a 20-10 opening quarter lead and never relented over the next three quarters.

Cartright led the way for the Eagles with 17 points, connecting on five field goals and seven of eight at the line. Kerner tallied 10. The Eagles are now 5-4 in the conference, 10-12 overall.

North Clay (Louisville) came calling and captured a 62-55 non-conference win over Brownstown/St. Elmo.

The Cardinals took a 26-21 halftime lead then had a 16-9 third quarter run. K. Stanfield led the way with 22 points while Wyatt added 19.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Austin with 16 and Pruett with 12.

South Central edged Webber Township (Bluford) 50-45. Webber held a 28-20 hafltime lead before South Central came back with a 30-17 second half run to pull out the victory, it's first of the season.

Hahn taliled 15 to lead the winners while McCoy scored 11. The Cougars improve to 1-18 on the season.
