Bulldogs Beat Cougars, Girls Basketball Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony pushed out to a 12-4 opening quarter lead behind Megan Nuxoll's eight points and led 28-7 at halftime over South Central in girls basketball competition Monday evening.

The Bulldogs went on for a 58-19 win. Only one player hit double figures for St. Anthony but 12 scored in the contest. Nuxoll led the way with 10 points while Morgan Gardewine, Kate Richards and Makayla Walsh scored eight each.

South Central was led by Abby Hahn with 10.

At Dieterich

Dieterich edged North Clay (Louisville) 66-64 in a non-conference contest Monday evening.

The Maroons took a 16-12 opening quarter lead but North Clay came back with a 23-17 run to lead 35-33 at halftime. The momentum then shifted back to Dieterich in the third period as the Maroons pushed into a 54-50 lead going into the final period then had to hold off the Cardinals to pull out the victory.

Courtney Flach tallied 21 and Mallorie Vahling 20 for the winners. Rachel Schmidt chipped in with 16 points. Vahling connected on eight of 12 at the free throw line. The Maroons improve to 6-12 on the season.

North Clay was led by Kortney Stanfield with 24 and Carrsan Bible with 22.

Neoga picked up a National Trail Conference victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 74-41.

The Indians took a 21-6 first quarter lead and led 45-15 at halftime. Deters tallied 20, Thies 17, Butler 15 and Ott 13 for the winners. Neoga improved to 16-8.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City was led by J. Morrison with 14.

Lawrenceville handed Newton a 60-46 Little Illini Conference loss in action Monday evening.

The Eagles edged out to a 17-16 opening quarter lead but Lawrenceville came back to take a 30-28 halftime lead. Lawrenceville pushed ahead 30-18 in the second half.

Andrews scored 16, Mefford 15 and Osmon 14 for the winners. Newton was led by Richards with 19. The Eagles drop to 4-3 in the conference, 9-12 overall.
