Windsor, Stewardson-Strasburg First Night Winners at NTC Tournament

The Windsor Blue Devils and the Stewardson-Strasburg Comets posted first night wins at the 79th Annual National Trail Conference Tournament at Altamont.

Windsor won over the Cowden-Herrick Hornets 61-38 in the opening game and Stew-Stras defeated the South Central Cougars 47-36.  Both games were heard on 979XFM and there was audio and video streaming of both games at www.979xfm.com.  

The first contest saw the ninth seed defeat the eighth seed.  Cowden-Herrick took a 5-0 lead and still led 7-3 before Windsor scored the last seven points of the quarter to lead 10-7 and continued extend the lead.  Windsor led 24-13 at halftime and was in front 44-26 after three quarters.  Windsor outscored the Hornets 17-12 in the final period to win by 23.

Windsor hit 21 of 44 shots for 48% and made 14 of 15 foul shots.  The Blue Devils turned the ball over 18 times but grabbed 21 rebounds.  Windsor made five of 16 three-point shots.

Cowden-Herrick made 16 of 40 shots, including five of 15 three-point tries and made just one of just four foul shots.  The club turned the ball over 24 times and pulled down 20 rebounds.

Tristan Warner led Windsor with 24 points, Nicholas Hutchinson scored 11 points and Hayden Cole added 10 points.  Also for Windsor: Alex Allen seven, Mitchell Haddock five, and Kyle Peadro two.

Cowden-Herrick got seven points apiece from Dylan Barnes, Colton Evans and Colton Sphar, as well as four points each from Colton Burrus, Micah Sandiford and Aaron Nohren, three points from Noah Sandiford and two points from Konner Blackerby.

Windsor improved to 5-12, while Cowden-Herrick is now 3-13.

In the second game, Stew-Stras led throughout the game, 12-8 after one quarter, 30-15 at halftime and 38-28 after three quarters.  

The Comets made 18 of 49 shots from the field, eight of 14 from the foul line, grabbed 21 rebounds and made three of 12 three-point shots while turning the ball over just five times.

South Central made 15 of 35 shots for 43%, hit six of eight from the foul line, turned the ball over 19 times and pulled down 25 rebounds while missing their only two three-point tries.

Brandon Helmuth led Stew-Stras with 23 points.  Also for the Comets: Mark Jones eight, Aaron Blythe six, Jason Fry five, Bryce Bugger three and Ted Kessler two.

Brett Harmeier scored 11 points for South Central.  Also for the Cougars: Evan Langley six, Chase Riley, Tyler Ross and Sean O'Leary five points each, and Noah Powless four points.  

Stew-Stras improved to 6-11 while South Central is still looking for its first win after 18 games.

Tonight at Altamont, top-seeded St. Anthony takes on Windsor at 6:15pm and St. Elmo/Brownstown will play Neoga at 7:45pm.  Both games will again be heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com and both audio and video streaming will again be available.
