EJHS, St. Anthony Win At Greenville Tourney

Effingham and Effingham St. Anthony advanced in winner bracket play at the 66th Annual James Burke Memorial Boys Basketball Tournament in Greenville Monday evening.

Effingham defeated Hillsboro 40-26 in the opener. Mason Hull tallied 18 points while Ryan Sandifer added 11. Sandifer led the Mustangs in steals with six. Adam Levitt and Hull had seven rebounds each.

Effingham improved to 14-2 on the season.

St. Anthony beat Aviston 32-27. The Bulllpups took a 9-7 opening quarter lead and led 17-9 at halftime. Aviston came back with an 8-2 third quarter run but St. Anthony remained in control.

Jackson Nuxoll led St. Anthony with 13 points. The Bullpups are now 13-4 on the seas.

In the other games, Triad edged Salem 47-46 and Carlyle won over Greenville 44-35.

The tournament continues tonight, weather permitting, with consolation bracket action as Hillsboro takes on Salem at 6 and Aviston meets Greenville at 7.  Effingham will face Triad Thursday at 6 while St. Anthony takes on Carlyle at 7. If both Effingham teams wiin they will square off for the championship at 7 p.m. Friday.
