Lady Hearts Improve to 16-0 w/Win Over Charleston

The Effingham Lady Hearts remain undefeated on the season after defeating the Charleston Lady Trojans 58-38 Monday night at Charleston.

The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com.

Charleston took a quick 3-0 lead, but the Lady Hearts scored the next 16 points and led 18-5 after one quarter.  Effingham outscored the Lady Trojans 17-9 in the second quarter to lead 35-14 at halftime.  Charleston crept to within 46-29 after three quarters, but Effingham outscored Charleston 12-9 in the final stanza to win by 20 points.

Effingham shot 50% from the field, hitting 19 of 38 shots including six of 15 three-point tries. Effingham was also 14 of 19 from the foul line, committed 10 turnovers and grabbed 19 rebounds.

Charleston hit 37% of its shots, making 14 of 38 tries.

Senior Lauren Stephenson led Effingham with 18 points, coming off the bench.  Stephenson made seven of nine shots from the field and all four of her foul shots.  Junior point guard Jantzen Michael scored 17 points on five of nine shooting, including three three-pointers.  Also in double figures was Josie Zerrusen with 13 points while leading in rebounds with eight.

Also for Effingham: Stephanie Robb six, and Caitlin Kaufman and Maddy Field with two apiece.

Morgan Sherwood led Charleston with 17 points.

Effingham is now 16-0 and 5-0 in the Apollo Conference.  Charleston is now 10-8 on the season. The Lady Hearts play Newton Tuesday night in a makeup game of a weathered-out contest.
