Altamont To Host Chief Illiniwek

Altamont High School will play host to Chief Illiniwek Tuesday, January 14. The Chief will perform at halftime of the varsity boys basketball game between Altamont and Vandalia.

This will be the traditional halftime dance Chief Illiniwek has performed for almost a century. All Illinois alumni are asked to attend the game and participate by ringing the horseshoe in the gym in celebration of this tradition.

The Chief will speak to students in the afternoon about this tradition and students also will view an authentic Native American Hoop Dance Celebration.

Chief Illiniwek is no longer associated with the University of Illinosi and the University of Illinois does not sanction the Chief's appearance.

The junior varsity game begins at 6:15 p.m. and the varsity follows 20 minutes after the completion of that game.
