Lady Bulldogs Suffer Two Defeats at Mattoon Tourney; Other Thursday Scores

The St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs ran into two quality girls basketball programs and suffered two losses to show for it in first day action Thursday at the Mattoon Girls Holiday Tournament.

Olney East Richland defeated St. Anthony 50-45 in the morning and Salem won over the Lady Bulldogs 49-34 in the afternoon.

In the loss to Olney, St. Anthony was down 19-6 after one quarter and spent the rest of the game trying to catch up.  St. Anthony held its own in the middle two quarters and outpointed Olney 17-10 in the fourth period but lost by five.

Kate Richards led the way for St. Anthony with 23 points.  Also for St. Anthony: Megan Nuxoll nine, Emma Richards four, Abby Brown three, Morgan Gardewine three.

In the loss to Salem, the Lady Bulldogs again dug themselves a big hole, trailing 21-8 after one quarter and 33-16 at halftime.  St. Anthony outscored Salem 11-7 in the fourth quarter to narrow the gap.

Megan Nuxoll led St. Anthony in scoring with 12 points.  Also for St. Anthony: Abby Brown five, Emma Richards four, Kate Richards four, Maddie Schuette three, Morgan Gardewine two, Lauren Wendt two, and Maggie Mumm two.

St. Anthony will be back in action Friday at 8:30am against Decatur MacArthur.
