Altamont Captures St. Elmo Holiday Tournament Crown

ST. ELMO -- Altamont High School captured the championship of the 54th Annual St. Elmo/Brownstown Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Indians took on host St. Elmo/Brownstown and claimed a 72-49 win. SE/B edged out to a 17-16 first quarter lead but Altamont came back with a 25-14 second period run to lead 41-31 at halftime. The Indians then outscored the Eagles 14-9 in the third quarter.

Ziegler tallied 20 as three players hit double figures for the winners. Armstrong chipped in with 14 and Seidel added 10. St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by L. Maxey with 17 and M. Maxey with 16. Altamont is now 6-0 while St. Elmo/Brownstown is 5-3.

In the third place game, Beecher City defeated Okaw Valley 58-52 in overtime. The Eagles took a 15-4 opening quarter lead and led 31-21 at halftime. Beecher City still held a 41-34 lead going into the final period. Okaw Valley then came roaring back with a 14-7 run to knot the score at 48-48 sending the game into overtime. The Eagles then had a 10-4 OT run to pull out the victory.

Gardner tallied 20 and Rexroad 19 for the winners. Beecher City is now 4-2 on the season.

In the fifth place game, Ramsey defeated Cowden-Herrick 63-38. Ramsey's Ryan Kelly set a new St. Elmo Tournament record with 11 three's in the game for 35 points. Kelly knocked in six three-pointers in the third quarter. Knisley added 10 points.

Cowden-Herrick was led by Burrus with 12 points. The Hornets drop to 3-8 on the season.

In the seventh place contest, Mulberry Grove won over South Central 53-46. The score was tied at 19-19 at halftime before Mulberry Grove had a 21-14 third period scoring run and that was the difference in the game.

Latham tallied 19, James 14 and Redfern 10 for the winners. South Central was led by Harmeier with 11 and Langley with 10.

Named to the First Team All-Tourney were Garrett Ziegler (Altamont), MVP; Levi Maxey (SE/B), Klaiton Wolff (Altamont), Brady Barnes (Beecher City), Colton Burrus (Cowden-Herrick). Named to the Second All-Tourney Team were Jacob Behrends (SE/B), Tyler Knisley (Ramsey), Peyton Hagerman (Okaw Valley), Jack Criner (Mulberry Grove) and Brett Harmeier (South Central).

First in the Cheerleading Competition went to St. Elmo/Brownstown and second went to Altamont.
