St. Elmo/Brownstown, Beecher City Advance in St. Elmo Tourney

St. Elmo/Brownstown and Beecher City captured victories Wednesday evening at the 54th Annual St. Elmo Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament.

The tournament continues tonight with Cowden-Herrick facing South Central at 6:15 p.m. followed by Altamont taking on Okaw Valley around 7:45 p.m.

St. Elmo/Brownstown 54, Mulberry Grove 45

Mulberry Grove took the early lead with a 14-13 edge in the opening quarter. James connected on 13 of his final 18 points for Mulberry Grove.

But SE/B came back with an 18-11 second period run on three trifectas by Behrends and the Eagles held a 31-25 halftime lead.

Mulberry Grove went on a 12-8 run in the third quarter to pull within 39-37 but the Eagles went out at 15-8 in the final period behind free throw shooting. The Eagles connected on eight of 12 from the line.

Behrends finished with 23 points, four baskets coming from beyond the arc. L. Maxey chipped in with 12 and Smithson 10.

Beecher City 56, Ramsey 31

Beecher City held a 27-10 halftime lead and was in control throughout the contest. The Eagles' Doty tallied eight of his team's 10 points in the opening quarter. Then it was B. Barnes with 11 points in the second quarter run.

Barnes went on to finish with 21 points while Doty tallied 10 for the winners.

The Eagles will now face St. Elmo/Brownstown at 7:45 p.m. Friday. Ramsey drops into a consolation game against Mulberry Grove at 6:15 p.m. Friday.
