ST. ELMO -- Altamont and Okaw Valley picked up victories in opening games at the 54th St. Elmo Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening.

In the opening game, Altamont bounced Cowden-Herrick 81-48. The Indians edged out to an 18-10 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 37-21 at halftime. McGinnis tallied nine points and Ziegler seven in the third quarter 26-18 run.

McGinnis led four players in double figures with 14 points. Ziegler and Wolff tallied 13 points each and Jackman scored 12.

Cowden-Herrick was led by Burrus with 19 points.

In the second contest, Okaw Valley defeated South Central 60-40. Okaw Valley broke a 12-12 first quarter tie with a 12-10 second period edge to lead 24-22 at halftime. Okaw Valley then broke the game open with a 23-2 third quarter run as Hagerman tallied 13 points.

Hagerman finished with 24 to lead the winners while Still added 19.

South Central was led by Harmeier with 11.

Tonight's games feature St. Elmo/Brownstown against Mulberry Grove at 6:15 and Beecher City taking on Ramsey at 7:45. Cowden-Herrick and South Central meet at 6:15 p.m. Thursday while Altamont takes on Okaw Valley at 7:45.

At Toledo

Charleston came calling in a non-conference contest and took a 59-41 victory over host Cumberland Tuesday evening.

The Trojans didn't waste any time, jumping out to a 22-4 opening quarter lead. That lead held up as the Pirates came back to keep pace over the next three quarters as each team scored 37 points.

M. Huddleston led the way for Charleston with 21 points while A. Gowin and K. Smith added 10 each.

Cumberland was led by Houston Napier with 19 points.

At Paris

Newton improved its overall record to 6-1 on the season with a 60-57 win over Paris.

The Eagles edged out to a 16-13 first period lead and led 30-19 at halftime. Paris came back with an 18-14 third quarter run to pull within 44-37 and then made a big run in the final quarter only to fall short.

Newton's Luke Stone kept the Eagles going with 27 points while Brock Mammoser chipped in with 23.

Paris was led by Denver Brewer with 14, Austin Temples with 13 and Riley Spencer with 12.

Casey-Westfield took off to a 20-8 opening quarter lead on Neoga but the Indians came roaring back in the second period to pull within 33-28 at halftime. The Warriors then had a 17-6 third period run.

Three players hit double figures for Casey-Westfield, coached by former Neoga coach Jason Hanson. Brandon Wolfe led the way with 19 points while Corey Carver added 11 and Sam Huisinga 11.

Neoga was led by Jake Baker with 15 points and Corey Kersey who had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
