St. Anthony Downs S. Central; EHS Falls To Charleston

South Central tallied eight points while St. Anthony could only manage four in the opening quarter Tuesday evening. But the Bulldogs went on a 25-11 second quarter tear and finished out with a 60-34 victory as the two National Trail Conference teams met at the Enlow Center 

Ethan Watwood connected on two three-pointers in that opening quarter run by the Cougars and Aidan Dodson contributed the other two points on free throws.

But the Bulldogs' Ryan Schmidt went to work in the second period. Schmidt connected on four baskets, one a three-pointer, and was two of two at the line for 11 points while Michael Martelli nailed two three-pointers and Brock Fearday hit a three-pointer and a free throw.

From that point on, the Bulldogs were in charge. St. Anthony had an 18-7 third quarter and finished strong.

Schmidt led the way with 21 points on eight field goals, three trifectas and two of two at the line. He was the lone player in double figures. Collin Westnedorf and Fearday finished with eight each.

South Central was led by Dodson with 16 points and Watwood with nine. The Cougars drop to 3-4 in the conference, 19-9 overall.

St. Anthony improved to 6-1 in the conference and 18-10 overall.

St. Anthony won the junior varsity game by the same score as the varsity contest, 60-34. Leading the Bulldogs were Brady Hatton with 13, Henry Brent with 12 and Nick Ruholl with 10. South Central was led by Brody Markley with 13.

At Effingham

Charleston stepped out to a 20-8 opening quarter lead then had to hold off a challenge by Effingham to take a 69-61 overtime victory as two Apollo Conference teams met Tuesday evening.

The Trojans moved into a 20-8 opening quarter lead behind a three-point barrage that included six with only one regular basket.

But the Hearts came back with a 19-6 second period to pull ahead 27-26 at halftime. In that run, Andrew Splechter connected on two baskets and four of four at the line for eight while Gunner Brown and Garrett Wolfe added four points each and Andrew Donaldson a three-pointer.

The Hearts still held a lead going into the final quarter by a 38-36 count. But Charleston came back with a 15-13 run to tie the score, sending the contest into overtime.

Charleston took charge of the overtime period with an 18-10 run for the eight-point victory. The Trojans connected on 11 of 14 from the free throw line in that quarter and were 13 of 18 for the game. The Trojans finished with eight three-pointers.

Three players hit double figures for the Trojans. Luke Bonnstetter led the way with 16 points while Caleb Oakley added 15 and Tyler Oakley 14.

Effingham was led by Splechter with 21 points on seven field goals and seven of eight at the line. Wolfe finished with 14 and Donaldson added 12.
