St. A, Neoga Continue To Roll, N. Clay, Newton Also Nab Girls Victories

Effingham St. Anthony put together some hot-scoring from the free throw line in downing Brownstown/St. Elmo, 42-29 in girls high school basketball Thursday.

The Bulldogs edged ahead 13-9 in the opening quarter behind two three-pointers by Nancy Ruholl and a basket and three free throws from Lucy Fearday.

BSE kept close, also with some hot shooting from the free throw line, as Lexi Seabaugh connected on five of six in the quarter.

The score slowed down for both teams in the second period as St. Anthony had a slight 7-4 edge to lead 20-13 at halftime.

BSE came back with a 12-10 third period run to pull within 30-25. Seabaugh connected on two baskets and three of four from the free throw line for seven points.

Ruholl kept the Bulldogs ahead with two three-pointers in the quarter.

In the final period, St. Anthony went on a 12-4 run, hitting only one basket but connecting on 10 of 14 from the free throw line. Fearday hit the basket and was four of six at the line while Ruholl hit five of six from the gratis stripe.

Ruholl led the way for St. Anthony with 17 points on four three-pointers and five of six at the line. Fearday added 15 points on three baskets and nine of 12 at the line.

BSE was led by Seabaugh with 13 points on two field goals and nine of 12 at the line.

At Neoga

Neoga edged out to a 15-13 opening quarter lead on Dieterich then went on a run to take a 51-37 victory Thursday.

The Indians held a 34-16 halftime lead  Dieterich came back with a 21-17 second half run but couldn't get over that second quarter surge by Neoga.

Sydney Richards, who was named the Pork Power IHSA Girls Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 22-29, finished with 24 points on nine field goals and four of six at the line. Also in double figures was Allison Worman with 13.

Dieterich was led by Miley Britton with 13 points on five field goals and two of three at the line.

Neoga improved to 26-3 on the season and will play host to Teutopolis Monday for Senior Night and Shoot for a Cure activities.

Dieterich claimed the junior varsity game, 29-21. Dieterich was led by Kady Tegeler with 14 points. Neoga was led by Natalie O'Dell with 10.

At Strasburg

North Clay picked up a 44-35 win over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg as two National Trail Conference teams met Thursday.

The Cardinals edged out to a 6-5 opening quarter lead as Alexis VanDyke nailed a three-pointer. 

North Clay then went on a run with an 18-5 second period to lead 24-10 at halftime. Allison Czyzewski scored four baskets for eight points while VanDyke hit two more three-pointers for six.

WSS then came back with a run of its own in the third quarter, outscoring North Clay 18-9 to pull ahead 35-33. Ella Kinkelaar connected for three baskets that included one three-pointer and hit a free throw for eight points while Morgan Mathis had two three-pointers for six.

North Clay then got back on track with an 11-7 final period to win by nine. Miah Ballard took over scoring for the Cardinals with a basket and five of seven at the line for seven points. Mallory Boose hit a basket and Czyzewski two free throws.

Czyzewski finished with 14 for the winners while Ballard added 13.

North Clay improved to 3-4 in the NTC and 15-9 overall. The Cardinals return to action Saturday against St. Anthony at 11 a.m. and will also host Wayne City at 2 p.m. and will honor their seniors.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Kinkelaar with 16.

At Newton

Newton pounded out a 33-14 win over Casey-Westfield in Little Illini Conference and Senior Night action Thursday.

The Eagles held a 10-2 opening quarter lead and led 13-9 at halftime. Newton finished strong with an 11-0 final period.

Lilly Kessler led the way for Newton with 16 points on six field goals and four of eight at the line. Kessler also led in rebounds with 11. 

Karasyn Martin led in steals with four. Elley Bennett had three assists.

Newton improved to 13-14 and finished in the LIC with a 3-4 record.

The lone senior, Alexis Hetzer, scored the first basket of the game for the Eagles.

"I am so proud of Alexis for all of her hard work and dedicaton to our program," said Newton Coach Brad Harris. "She has always been such a positive influence for our team. Even after her injury sidelined her for the season, she stayed positive and was always there for her teammates. Thank you Alexis."

Newton won the junior varsity game, 30-22. Barthelemy led the way with nine points for the Eagles. Newton's JV finishes at 5-2 in the conference and is 13-3 overall.

At Nokomis

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City fell in a non-conference contest to Nokomis Thursday, 70-53.

Nokomis held a 37-24 halftime lead then finished with a 20-15 final quarter.

Macee Rodman led the Bobcats with 23 points on seven field goals that included five three-pointers, and was four of four at the line. Ruby Stuckemeyer added 10 points.

Mady Wojcik led in rebounds with 10 while Rodman added nine. Gracie Heckert had six steals and Carmen Olesen led in assists with three.

CHBC dropped to 15-10 on the season.

Nokomis connected on 10 three-pointers in the game, led by Natalie Engelman with four and Addison Dangbar with three.

In the junior varsity game, Nokomis was a 42-17 winner. Karlee Smith led CHBC with 10.
